ASSESSMENT
Tutorial exercises [10 per cent]
Tutorial exercises are primarily a teaching and learning device, not
an assessment device. However marks are allocated in order to encourage
completion of each exercise.
Copies of your answers to weekly tutorial exercises (10 in total) must
be handed in each Tuesday at the beginning of class. Tutorial exercises
will be handed out on the previous Tuesday, so that you will have one
week to complete them. No late submissions will be accepted. If you
are unable to attend class that day, you may submit your solutions in
advance, by email or through a classmate at the due time.
Each submitted tutorial will count for 1.25% towards the final grade.
Therefore, 8 of the 10 tutorials must be completed to obtain the full
ten per cent. Your tutorial preparation will be assessed not on the
correctness of your answers (which won't be formally marked), but on
whether it represents genuine effort.
Solutions to the tutorial exercises will be placed on the web the day
after exercises have been handed in. Solutions will be presented in
class once Rebecca has read through your submissions, generally on Thursdays.
You are encouraged to work together on the tutorial exercises. However
make sure that each collaborator understands and has input to the problem-solving
process. Each student is expected to write up their own answers.
Simply copying some-one else's work defeats the main purpose of the
exercises. Identical answers will all receive a zero grade. If you are
struggling with the exercises please seek assistance from Rebecca.
You are welcome to use computer spreadsheets for tutorial exercises
and the assignment. However keep in mind that in the exam you will have
to rely on your calculator, and so some practice using it may be advisable.
Assignment [40 per cent]
The assignment will be handed out early in the semester. Due date to
be advised. It may be handed to Rebecca personally or placed in the
assignment box at Coombs before this time (no emails). Late assignments
will incur a penalty of 5 percentage points per day or part day overdue.
It is strongly recommended that you begin work on the assignment
early in the semester. Aim to complete one or two questions per week.
Don't leave everything to the semester break!
The assignment allows you to demonstrate your grasp of the concepts,
principles and techniques taught in this course. You must work alone
on the assignment. Working with other students or outsiders is not permitted.
Any clear evidence of collaboration will result in penalties for all
students involved.
Please ensure that your assignment is appropriately referenced. Plagiarism
is unacceptable and will also result in penalties. The preferred method
of referencing is that used in the Journal of Population Research.
Your assignment must be formatted in accordance with the 'Assignment
expectations and information' sheet handed out with the assignment.
If you don't understand an assignment question, approach Rebecca and
explain your difficulty. She will do her best to help, consistent with
not giving you an unfair advantage over other students.
Final examination [50 per cent]
Date to be advised (3 hours with 15 minutes reading time). The examination
will cover material from the entire course. Four A4 (one-sided) pages
of notes may be brought to the exam.
The examination will consist of six questions. One of these questions
will be compulsory and you choose three of the remaining questions.
Each question is worth 25%. Examinations from previous years will be
handed out later in the semester.
Remember to bring your (fully charged) calculator!
