This course examines international migration from both theoretical and empirical perspectives to provide students with an understanding of the factors behind current trends in international population movements and their impacts on the migrants themselves and the countries of origin and destination. Specific topics examined each year include gender and migration, the concept of 'replacement migration', the effectiveness of temporary migrant worker programs and the Global Commission on International Migration report. Case studies focussing on Australia, the US, Europe and the Asian region allow for a comparison of the different types of movements and associated policy response.
