COURSE OUTLINE
Part One: Introduction and methods

Health and demographic
change: epidemiological and demographic transition theory, changing
global patterns of health and disease.

Measuring health:
basic terminology, the International Classification of Disease (ICD),
sources of health data and their interpretation, prevalence and incidence,
standardized indicators.

Understanding
risk: genetic, socio-economic and lifestyle risk factors
-
Health services
and disease prevention: public health, services for acute and chronic
conditions, primary healthcare.
Part Two: Health through life
Each session will examine health patterns and healthcare needs of the
age group, with special attention to variations by gender and socio-economic
characteristics.

Health of the

Part Three: Demographic implications of some contemporary health issues

Demographic impact
of HIV/AIDS

Changing efficacy
of healthcare and issues of access: medical advances, high tech medicine,
resistance to antibiotics

The globalisation
of health: surveillance, WHO, CDC, international health policies,
strategies and responses.
Class presentations
Two sessions will be allocated to presentation of participants' special
topics in health. Each will comprise a 15-minute presentation on a population
health issue selected by the participant, followed by 10-15 minutes
of discussion.
