The Master of Population Studies is a professional degree designed to provide the skills and expertise required of the practising demographer. It offers a firm technical foundation in demographic analysis, a knowledge of modern population trends, and an appreciation of the main current issues of public policy concerned with population. More broadly, the course provides a major emphasis on training in social science research methods. Students attaining a high level of performance in the MPS degree will have a strong foundation for PhD studies in Demography or a related discipline. The coursework covers both industrialised and developing countries, and seeks a balance between demographic analysis and the economic, sociological, anthropological, political and other dimensions of the field. The Ruzicka Prize is awarded annually for the best performance in the MPS.

Admission criteria

The usual minimum entrance requirement is an undergraduate pass degree of an acceptable standard, adequate skill in mathematics and a satisfactory English proficiency score. Unless exempted by means of a test or documented qualification, students should undertake the Preparatory Program beginning in January before enrolling in the MPS program in February. Pre-course English training can be undertaken via ANU College, if required.

Program structure

The program comprises 48 units. There are 18 units of compulsory courses and 30 units of elective courses.

Compulsory

Students in the Master of Population Studies program are required to take compulsory courses to attain a professional level of skills in Demography. Students who have already completed courses in other universities covering the same material may petition the Head, Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute, to be granted standing in the compulsory courses. They would then need to substitute elective courses of equal unit value to make up the 24 unit minimum semester load.
